이 땅에는 건축주의 아버지가 지으시고, 건축주가 가족들과 어린시절을 보냈던 낡은 집들이 있었다. 하지만 가족들이 모두 고향을 떠난 후 오랫동안 사용되지 않고 남겨져 있던 집은 이제 낡고 무너져 가고 있었고, 이에 인근 평창읍에서 오랫동안 치과를 운영하시던 건축주는 이 집으로 돌아오려는 계획을 세우셨다. 건축주와 함께 처음 이 땅을 방문했을 때 비교적 넓은 대지에는 몇 개의 동으로 나누어진 집들이 있었고, 그 사이사이에는 건축주의 어린시절 기억이 남아 있는 작은 마당과 우물 등 다양한 외부공간들이 있었다. 또한 대지는 주변의 여러 방향에서 접근할 수 있는 길들과 이어져 있었고, 따라서 큰 가로에 접해 있기도 했지만, 대지의 모든 부분이 주변마을에서 작은 길들로 이어지고, 바라보이는 특징을 갖고 있었다.

건축에 대한 방향은 이런 지점들에서 시작하였다. 먼저 대지에는 최대한의 부피를 채우기 보다는 건축과 외부공간을 적절하게 분배하여 기존의 집이 갖고 있던 중정과 외부공간이라는 공간적 특성을 유지하게 하고자 하였다. 따라서 건축주가 필요로 하는 치과와 주거공간, 그리고 후에 건축주가 그 활용을 고민하기로한 여유공간, 여기에 가로에 면해 약간의 임대를 위한 공간들을 적정한 부피로 나누어 대지에 배치하였다. 그 과정에서 각각의 부피들은 가로에 면하거나, 혹은 중정을 면하거나, 독립된 외부공간을 갖는 등 내,외부 공간이 적절하게 이어지고 함께 활용될 수 있도록 하였다.  

다음으로 주변의 여러 방향에서 건물을 봤을 때, 보는 위치에 따라 서로 다른 형태와 표정을 통해 마을의 시각적 중심이 될 수 있도록, 각 매스의 형태를 조정하여 집합된 건축이 주는 다양함을 갖도록 하였다.

건물은 어두운 색의 컬러강판을 통해 지붕과 벽을 하나의 재료로 처리함으로써 벽과 지붕으로 구성된 일반적인 집의 이미지가 아닌, 여러 개의 덩어리 혹은 어떤 형태들의 집합으로 보이게 하고자 하였다. 하지만 내부로 들어가면 완전히 다른 공간을 만난다. 건물 전체적으로 거의 20개의 천창들을 통해 들어오는 빛은 높은 층고를 가진 하얀 내부공간을 밝고 흥미로우며, 때로는 우와하게 느끼게 해준다. 특히나 이를 극대화 하기 위해 치과 같은 경우에는 천장에 조명기구를 설치하지 않고, 현장에서 제작한 조명박스 등을 통해 전체 조도를 확보 하였다. 천창에서의 빛을 강조하기 위함이다.

여기에 치과의 진료공간은 전면창을 통해 진료의자에 앉았을때 풍성한 가로수를 바라보게 된다. 이처럼 높은 층고와 유리, 천장을 통해 들어오는 풍성한 빛, 그리고 정면의 녹색이 우거진 가로수까지, 치과가 가진 일반적인 이미지와 다른 공간적 경험을 환자에게 제공한다.

각각의 공간들은 가로의 가로수나, 중정 혹은 마당의 나무들을 향해 열린 창을 갖는다. 이를 통해 나무를 어느 공간에서나, 언제든 볼 수 있는 시각적 개방감과 쾌적함을 갖는다. 노출된 콘크리트와 검은색 컬러강판으로 구성된 외부의 이미지와 대비되는 경험을 제공한다.

치과를 포함해 전체 공간을 구성하면서, 단순히 임대를 위한 최대면적이나 효율만을 가치의 우선에 두지 않았다. 치과를 방문하는 환자들, 혹은 다른 공간을 사용하는 사람들, 그들에게 제공할 수 있는 가치가 무엇인지에 대해 고민하고 그것을 전체구성의 우선 가치로 두었다. 또한 이 땅에 오랫동안 남아 있던, 건축주의 어린시절 배경이 되어준, 공간적 특성을 최대한 고려하여 유지하고자 하였다. 덕분에 현재 공간은 임대로 계획한 공간을 치과로 활용하는 것까지 고민할 정도로 활성화 되었다. 이 모든 것은 최대면적보다는 적절한 면적의 공간을, 내 외부를 활용한 공간의 쾌적함을 이해하고 지지해준 건축주의 혜안 덕분이다.

On this land, there were old houses built by the owner's father where he spent his childhood with his family. However, the house that had been left unoccupied for a long time after the family left their hometown was now dilapidated and collapsing, and the owner, who had run a dentist's office for decades in a nearby town, made plans to return to this house. When I first visited the land with the client, there were houses divided into several buildings on a relatively large site, and in between, there were various outdoor spaces such as a small yard and a well that retained the memories of the client's childhood. In addition, the site was connected with roads that could be accessed from various directions, meaning it was in contact with a large street, but all parts of the site were connected with small roads from the surrounding villages

The main ideas for building plans started from this. First, rather than cluttering the site with too many buildings and structures, I intended to maintain the spatial characteristics of the courtyard and exterior space of the existing house by appropriately dividing the space between building structures and empty spaces. The dentist's office space and residential space asked for by the client, the free space that the client decided to use later, and the small space facing the street to be used for rental properties were divided into appropriate sections and placed on the site accordingly. During the process, I ensured that each space facing the street or the courtyard has an independent external space so that the internal and external spaces could be properly connected and used together.

Next, when the building is viewed from various surrounding directions, each mass is adjusted into different shapes and expressions according to the point of view so that it can become the visual center of the village to ensure that the overall architecture has the diversity.

By treating the roof and the wall of the building as a single material through dark color steel plates, the aim was to make the building appear as a collection of several lumps or certain shapes rather than an image of a generic house composed of walls and a roof. But when you step inside, you meet a completely different space. The light coming through almost 20 skylights throughout the building makes the high-rise white interior feel bright, interesting, and often elegant. To maximize this effect, lighting fixtures were not installed on the ceiling of the dentist's office, and the entire illumination system was secured through a lighting box manufactured on site. This is to emphasize the illumination effect from the skylights.

Sitting in the treatment chair of the dentist's office one can overlook the lush trees in the street through the front window. With such a high floor height, glass ceiling, abundant light coming through the ceiling, and verdant street trees at the front, it provides patients with an experience quite different from the usual image of a dental office.

Each of the spaces has windows that open to the trees in the street, courtyard, or yard. Through this, it has an open at anytime. It provides an experience that contrasts with the barren image composed of exposed concrete and black steel plates.

While designing the entire space including the dentist's office, the emphasis was not on maximizing usable floor areas or potential rental income. Patients who visit the office, people who use other spaces on the site, and the value that can be provided to them were considered and prioritized for the overall design exercise. In addition, the spatial characteristics that have remained in this land for a long time, the background of the owner’s childhood, were kept intact. Thanks to this effort, the current space has become attractive enough for the owner to even consider using the space planned for rental as a dental office space. All of this is credited to the insight of the client, who understood and supported our plan to make the space as comfortable as possible rather than maximizing floor areas that can be rented.
