이 집은 “Low Cost House series” 의 세번째 프로젝트였다. 전남 화순군에 위치한 이 집에는 어머니가 세 아이와 함께 살고 있었다. 이 집의 가장 큰 문제는 바로 화장실이 없는 것이었다. 그래서 가족은 마당한켠에 구덩이를 파고 그곳을 화장실로 사용하고 있었다. 그렇다보니 화장실과 연동되는 욕실이 제대로 있을리가 없었다. 한마디로 씻고 싸는, 인간이 가진 욕구 중 가장 기본이면서도 가장 중요한 생리적 현상을 해결할 수가 없는 집이었다. 다행스러운건 구조나 지붕의 상태가 좋은편이어서 신축을 할 필요는 없어보였다. 따라서 우리는 집의 지붕이나 외벽과 구조는 가급적 유지한채 평면을 효율적으로 변경하고 단열을 보강하며, 무엇보다 화장실과 욕실을 추가로 만들기로 결정하였다. 

평편의 수정은 기본적으로 집의 중간에 주방과 거실을 통합한 가족실을 만드는 것에서 시작하였다. 그리고 이  가족실을 중심으로 한쪽으론 방을 만들고 다른 한쪽으론 화장실과 욕실 그리고 외부테라스공간을 만들었다. 

이 집은 특히나 화장실과 욕실에 힘을 주고자 고민하였다. 이 집의 아이들은 화장실과 욕실에 대해 일종의 두려움과 꺼림이 있었다. 따라서 우리는 화장실과 욕실이 어떻게 하면 아이들에게 긍정적인 공간으로 인식될 수 있을지에 대해 고민을 하였다. 

그 첫번째로 우선은 화장실을 밝게 만들었다. 그 동안의 화장실과 욕실이 어둡고 더러운 공간으로 인식되어졌기 때문이다. 따라서 화장실 공간의 지붕은 푸른색톤의 폴리카보네이트를 사용하였고 벽에는 흰색과 푸른색타일을 사용하였다. 다음으론 화장실과 욕실 공간이 분리된 공간이 아니라 집 내부공간의 한 부분으로 인식시켜주고자 하였다. 따라서 목욕탕, 세탁실, 세면대, 변기를 각각 모두 분리시켰고 이 기능들을 가족실, 외부테라스 공간과 연결하였다. 

여기서 가족실 및 욕실과 연결되어 있는 외부테라스는 이 집의 내부공간을 다양하게 해주는 중요한 요소이다. 우리는 기존의 담장을 살려서 새로 증축되는 부분과 기존의 담장으로 둘러쌓인, 완전하게 내부에서만 연결되는 외부테라스를 만들었다. 이 테라스는 아이들이 욕실에서 목욕을 하고 나와 몸을 말리며 놀수 있는 공간이자, 가족실의 연장으로 아이들이 내부와 외부를 자유로이 오가며 놀 수 있는 그런 공간이 되기를 바랬다.

집 내부를 수리하는 과정에서 지붕의 서까래들이 자유롭게 만들어 내는 형태가 무척이나 매력적이었다. 그래서 내부의 천정을 걷어내고 서까래사이에 단열재를 채워서 서까래들을 노출시키기로 하였다. 그럼으로써 집의 내부공간이 높아지고 시각적으로도 넓어 보이는  효과가 있었다. 

이러한 자연스러운 선들의 형상은 오래된 집만이 줄 수 있는 매력이다.

This was the third “Low Cost House Series” project. The house located in Hwasun-gun in Southwestern part of South Korea was a home for a family of a mother and three children. The biggest problem of the house was that there was no toilet and no bathroom. Due to this poor condition of the house, the family had to dig a hole in the yard and use it as a toilet. In short, the house could not satisfy the most basic human instincts to excrete and clean. Fortunately, its structure and roof were in good condition to be maintained. All we had to do was to make plans more effective and better insulated, and of course, to build a new toilet and a bathroom.

A family room was first created in the middle of the house to function as both living room and kitchen. With the family room at the center, rooms were built in one side and a toilet, a bathroom and outside terrace in the other side.

Our primary focus was on creating a positive image of a toilet and a bathroom for which the children had “fear”. First, we made the space very bright to shed its negative dirty image. Blue-colored polycarbonate was used for the top of the roof and white and blue tiles for the walls. Secondly, we tried to make the toilet and the bathroom perceived as a part of the inner space by separating a bathtub, a laundry, a sink and toilet while connecting their functions with the family room and the outside terrace.

The terrace connected with the family room and the bathroom plays an important role in making the inner space more diverse. It is a space surrounded by the existing fences and the newly exp now can take a bath in the bathroom and dry themselves in the terrace and also play freely across the inner and outer space of the house.

Rafters on the roof were also very fascinating. They were revealed during the removal of the building space, we have decided to remove the ceiling and expose the rafters. As such, the natural lines and shapes have added a final touch to the interior of the house.
