낙후된 지역의 아이들과 저소득층의 자녀들은 학교가 끝나면 마땅히 갈곳이 없다.

집에가도 돌봐주는 가족이 없고 마음놓고 가서 놀 공간도 없다. 바로 이런 아이들에게 어린이집이 되고 유치원이 되고  학교가 끝나면 학원처럼 부족한 공부를 가르쳐주는 곳이 바로 ‘지역아동센터’ 이다. 하지만 아동센터는 이러한 기능을 넘어 그 아이들에게 또 다른 집이며 가족이며 공동체의 역할 또한 하고 있다.

이러한 아동센터가 대한민국엔 약 4000여개가 있으며 한국의 남쪽끝 작은 어촌마을에 있는 강진 마량의 아동센터도 그중 하나이다. 하지만 이 아동센터가 지난 여름 태풍에 무너져서 아이들은 그 보금자리를 잃었다. 따라서 아이들에게 아동센터를 새로이 만들어주는 프로젝트가 시작되었고 한국 방송국인 SBS 와 어린이재단 그리고 많은 기업들이 참여하였다.

디자인의 단서는 아이들이 그린 그림에서 얻었고 그 방법은 명쾌해야했다.

그것은 단순하면서도 근본적이고, 아이들이 가장 많이 그린 ‘집모양’에서 시작해 그 단순한 공간을 반복하고 변형시켜 다양하고 풍부한 공간들을 만드는 것이다. 그 안에는 필요한 각 프로그램들이 들어가고 그 프로그램들 사이에서 서로 연계와 분리가 가능해야함은 물론이다. 또한 이 과정에서 내가 의도하지못했던 ‘재미있는 공간과 장면’이 발생하기를 원했다.

결과적으로 이 변형되고 반복된 집모양에 의해 센터에는 역동적인 지붕모양이 만들어 졌다. 이 지붕모양은 풍부한 내부공간을 만드는 동시에 외부에서는 다양한 표정의 외관을 만든다. 또한 바닷가의 아이들에게 이 겹쳐진 지붕들은 바다의 파도를 연상시킨다. 따라서 물고기 모양의 조명과 푸른색 조명을 이용해 아이들에게 물고기가 헤엄치는 센터를 상상하게 하고자 했다

센터는 바닷가에 있는 만큼 넓은 창을 통해 충분히 자연빛을 받아들여 환하고 따뜻한 내부가 될수 있도록 했으며 1층의 공간은 외부의 마당으로 연결되고, 2층의 공부방은 미끄럼틀이 있는 외부데크와 연결되어 아이들은 바다가 내려다 보이는 세상에서 가장 아름다운 전망을 가진 미끄럼틀을 가지게 되었다. 아이들에게 내부공간과 외부공간, 공부하는 것과 노는 것, 이 사이의 경계가 없길 바랬다.

Sannaedeul Children’s Center was the most precious place for children from low-income families in Maryang, a small seaside village located at the far southeast end of the Korean peninsula. It was the only playground, learning arena and shelter for the children. The center acted as another home and community in which they shared and grew hopeful dreams with one another.

However, the dreams seemed to have ended when a devastating hurricane hit the village last summer of 2012. The center was totally destroyed and left with nothing. Only to find the rubble of the building, the children still came to the site everyday after school and played on the ruins of what once was another home of theirs.

Fortunately, the news was heard by Korea’s major broadcast “SBS” and “Childfund Korea” who agreed to sponsor and launched the project of rebuilding the center. Many other public and private companies also joined the project, giving a momentum to build the children’s dream again.

The clue for design was foundamong the pictures of a new center drawn by the children themselves. The strategy had to be clear. It was to create various and plentiful spaces by repeating and transforming a simple “house-shaped” space suggested in the children’s drawings. Necessary programs were to be embedded into that volume. Then, they had to be connected with and divided by one another by the needs as well.In addition, we wanted to find unexpected interesting spaces and scenes being created in the process of design development.

As a result, the center could have a dynamic-shaped roof by the aforementioned repeated and transf time. The overlapped roof has also brought up the image of the sea waves to the children of Maryang, the fishing village. To further stimulate children’s imagination, we also installed fish-shaped instruments and blue lightings under the ceiling, giving the image of swimming fish.

The center was aimed to have bright and warm interiors by getting enough natural lighting of the seaside through wide windows. The multi-purpose hall of a ground floor was extended to open outdoor space. And the study room on the second floor was connected to a terrace with a slide on which the children can play, looking over the most beautiful seaside view of the world. We hoped that there is no border between inside and outside space as well as playing and studying for children in the center.
