아이들을 위한 공간이란 어떤 공간일까?

이 질문은 그리 어렵지도, 생소하지도 않은 질문이지만 우리는 쉽게 그 답을 찾지 못한다.

사실 찾지 못하는 건지, 아니면 알고 있지만 아는 것에서만 그치는 것인지는 모르겠다.

하지만 적어도, 각자가 내리는 답이 무엇인진 모르겠지만, 지금 현재 우리 아이들이 누리고 있는 공간이 각자가 생각하는 그 답과는 거리가 멀다는 것은 인정해야 할 것이다.

아이들을 위한 공간이란

참으로 많은 고려 해야 하는 요소들이 있겠지만, 그 중에서 우리가 가장 중요하다고 여겼던 것은 바로 " 아이들은 놀이를 통해서만 자라난다 " 라는 전제였다.

아이들은 지식의 습득도, 사회성의 발달도, 감성의 개발도 그 모든 것이 놀이를 통해서만 건강하게 이루어진다 라고 우리는 생각한다.

놀이를 통해서 느끼는 수많은 자극들, 그 자극들을 통해 아이들은 뇌의 발달, 신체의 발달, 그리고 감성의 발달이 가능하다고 믿는다. 그리고 이 놀이의 가장 중요한 핵심은 결국 아이들이 자연의 변화를 직접 몸으로 느낄 수 있도록 해 주는 것, 이를 통해 매일 매일 오감으로 느껴지는 미세하면서, 동시에 위대한 변화를 체험하고, 그로부터 늘 새로운 자극을 받는 것, 바로 이것이 놀이의 핵심이라고 생각한다.

그렇다면 그 동안 우리의 어린이집에서 가장 중요한 공간적 가치는 무엇일까?

현재 그것은 아마도 "효율과 관리" 일 것이다. 그렇다면 효율이라는 것은 무엇을 위한 효율일까? 그것은 바로 '관리의 효율' 이다.

따라서 결론적으로 우리나라의 어린이집에서 가장 큰 가치는 바로 '관리' 인 것이다.

당연히 과장된 부분이 있겠지만 적어도 현재는 그런 거 같다.

지금까지 어린이집은 상당부분 관리자의 입장에서 고민되었다.

그래서 어린이집을 계획할때 (이건 어린이집뿐만 아니라 거의 모든 시설에 해당되는 얘기이긴 하지만)가장 많이 듣게 되는 의견이 "이러면 관리가 어려운데...." 라는 말이다.

관리는 물론 중요하다. 그 관리를 통해 아이들을 보호하고 교육하는데 효율적인 부분도 분명 고려되어야 한다.

하지만 우리가 얘기하는 것은 그렇다고 관리가 가장 우선시 되어야 하는 가치는 아니라는 것이다. 아이들의 관점에서 보자면 지루한 복도형식의 교실배치로 교실에 있으나 복도로 나오나 다른 것을 느끼기 어렵고, 2,3살과 5,6살 아이들의 교실이 같은 구조여서, 한 살을 더 먹어도 달라지는 건 교실의 교구와 장난감들 정도라면 아이들은 어떻게 느낄까?

아침에 어린이집에 들어가면 하루에 한번 잠깐의 외부활동 시간 외에는 실내에서만 지내야 하는 공간이라면 이 공간이 일상의 아이들에게 충분한 자극을 줄 수 있을까?

우리는 아이들의 공간을 어른들의 '관리' 라는 관점으로 보는 것에서 벗어나 보고 싶었다.

아이들에게 일상에서 언제든 자연의 변화를 시각적, 촉각적으로 느낄 수 있도록 해주는 것과

그 동안 경험해보지 못했던 높이, 위치, 색, 형태의 공간에서 서로 다양한 시각적, 물리적 교류를 하고, 이로부터 다양한 자극을 주고 받을 수 있는 환경, 바로 이러한 환경을 만들어 보고자 하였다.

그 다음으로 이 공간을 채워나가는 것은 아이들의 몫이라고 믿는다.

아이들은 어른들이 생각하는 것 보다 더 똑똑해서 우리가 예측했던 것 이상의 다양한 방식으로 공간을 즐긴다. 그 과정에서 때로는 다칠 수도 있고, 넘어질 수도 있고, 부딪칠 수도 있다. 하지만 그러면 어떠한가

아이들은 다칠 권리가 있다. 그럼으로써 아이들은 빨리 깨닫고, 빨리 개선해 나가고, 빨리 치유된다. 아이들은 정말 놀랍다.

얼마전 이렇게 만들어진 늘사랑 어린이집의 이전 및 개원식이 있었다.

많은 학부모분들과 관계자분들이 방문해서 축하해 주셨다.

이 분들이 오셔서 하시는 말씀은 대체로 " 아이고~ 애들이 참 좋아하겠네~" 였다

인사처럼 하는 말일 수도 있지만 가장 본질적인 얘기인거 같다

무엇보다 애들이 좋아하는 것, 그것이 가장 바라던 것 이었으니까.

What kinds of spaces are spaces for children?

This question is not difficult or unfamiliar but is also not easy to answer.

I’m not sure whether we are unable to find answers, or whether we do know, but simply stop there.

While I don’t know the answers each of us would give, at the very least we should recognize that our answers have a large disparity with the spaces currently enjoyed by our children.

A Space for Children

Though there are numerous elements that should be considered, what we’ve regarded as most important is the premise that “children grow up only through play.”

We think that the acquisition of knowledge, development of socialization, and development of emotions all take place healthily through play alone.

We believe that children’s cerebral, physical, and emotional development are made possibly through the multitude of stimulation felt through play.  We also think that the very core of this play allows children to directly feel natural transformations and experience first-hand  delicate and profound transformations felt daily with the five senses, and receive new stimulation from this.

In this case, what has been the most important spatial value in nurseries?

Currently, that may be “efficiency and management”. So, what purpose does the efficiency serve? Its purpose is ‘management efficiency’.

Accordingly, the most significant value in Korea’s nurseries is their ‘management’.

Of course, some of this may be overstated, but this is how it seems today at least.

Until now, the majority of nurseries have been contemplated on from the perspective of the manager.

Therefore, when planning nurseries (not just nurseries, but nearly all facilities), the opinion we hear most is “it might be difficult to manage like this…”

Of course, management is important, and its aspects of efficiency should clearly be taken into consideration in the protection and education of children through it.

What we are saying, however, is that management isn’t the value that should be most pri perspective of children, the classroom is arranged in a dull corridor format, and it is difficult to feel anything different even when coming out of the corridor. Under the classroom environment of 2 and 3 year olds, which has the same structure as that of 5 and 6 year olds, how are children going to feel as they get older if the only things that change are the teaching aids and toys.

If the indo have to spend all day with the exception of a short-time outdoor activity, does that space provide adequate daily stimulation to the children?

I’d like to escape from the perspective that a space for children is a space for the ‘management’ of adults.

I believe that filling these spaces is the role of the children.

Children are smarter than adults think, and they enjoy spaces in a variety of ways that exceed what we predict. In that process, sometimes they may get injured, fall down, and bump into things. But so what?

Children have the right to get hurt. In doing so, children quickly learn, quickly improve, and quickly heal. Children are truly astonishing.

Some time ago there was a relocation and opening ceremony for the Always Love Nursery that was built in this manner.

Many parents of students visited to celebrate. 

What most of them said when coming to the nursery was “My goodness ~ the kids will love it here!”

It might be a remark in passing, but I think it was the most fundamental conversation at the event.

This is because the things that the children like were what we hoped for, more than anything.
