건축주는 Roaster café 를 하기 위해 오랜시간 준비해오셨다. 

그 과정에서 café 를 안정적으로 하기 위해 거주와 café 를 모두 담아낼 수 있는 건물을 짓기로 결정하셨다.

그렇게 해서 신중히 찾아 결정하신 장소가 사거리에서 눈에 쉽게 띄고, 두 면으로 녹지가 있어 도로와의 완충역할을 해줄 수 있는 현재의 대지였다

따라서 우리가 계획하는 과정에서 가장 중요하게 생각해야 하는 점도 이러한 대지의 조건과 주변의 건물들과 차별화 되기를 원하시는 건축주의 바램을 만족시키는 것이었다.

하지만 이 과정에서 가장 어려웠던 부분은 다름아닌 법규였다

이 지역은 법에 의해 지붕의 형태가 경사지붕이어야 한다는 규정이 있었고, 그 기울기 또한 정해져 있었다. 그런 이유 때문인지 주변에 있는 건물들은 모두가 같은 경사를 가진, 같은 모양의 지붕들을 하고 있었다. 

따라서 이러한 법규 안에서 주변의 건물들과 차별화 되는 형태를 만들기 위한 법규의 해석과 그를 관공서와 협의하는 과정이 가장 어려웠다.

건물은 1층의 까페, 2, 3 층의 주거공간으로 구성된다. 그리고 건축주가 거주할 3층은 건축주가 요구하신 대로 중정의 공간구성과 다락을 갖고 싶은 것, 그리고 부모님의 공간과 건축주의 공간을 영역적으로 분리하려고 하였다.

입면적으로는 사거리에서 쉽게 눈에 들어올 수 있도록 지붕의 형태를 통해, 건물이 높고 웅장하게 보이게 하고자 하였다. 또한 벽돌을 기본재료로 해서 벽돌이라는 재료의 특성을 살려 픽셀화를 통한 입면구성을 하고자 하였다. 

설계를 시작하고 공사가 끝나는 과정에서 많은 시간과 어려움이 있었다.

돌이켜보면 그 과정들을 그래도 무사히 마무리할 수 있었던 건 건축주의 넓은 이해와 

노력들 덕분이었다

공사가 끝나고 까페를 시작하시고 나서 건축주는 더 바빠지셨다.

다행히 건물을 보고 찾아오시거나, 건축주분의 (모두 직접 만드시는)커피와 빵을 드시고 소문을 듣고 찾아오시는 등 많은 사람이 찾고 있기 때문이다.

어떤 일이든 크게 들뜨거나 실망하는 경우보다는 늘 차분히 본질을 찾으려는 건축주의 성품이 아마도 까페의 커피와 빵에, 그리고 이곳의 손님들에게 전달되는 듯 하다

우리가 계획한 건물이 과연 건축주의 이러한 성품에 부합하는지는 의문이다.

다만 이 건물이 주변에서 다르게 보이며 눈에 띄듯이, 분명 다른 까페와는 조금은 다른 철학을 가진 건축주를 돋보이게는 할 수 있지 않을까 바래본다.  

Our client has prepared for a long time to open a roaster café. While preparing the launch, the client has decided to construct a building that has a café and residence to run the business stably. Thus, the current building site was chosen through a careful decision-making process. The site is easily noticeable from the intersection, and the green areas in two directions function as buffer zones between roads.

As a result, in addition to the building site, the most important thing to consider in the planning process was to satisfy the client’s desire f the most difficult part was to deal with a regulation in the region. The regulation indicated that a roof should be slanted at a certain angle. Probably, that is why the buildings in the area had roofs with the same slopes and shapes. Therefore, the biggest challenge remained in interpreting the regulation and negotiating with the administration office to design a distinctive building.

There should be a café on the first floor and residences on its second and third floors in the building. Additionally, the client wanted to live on the third floor, which had a courtyard and an attic. The client requested to own a separate space apart from a space of his parents.

We spent much time and experienced difficulties in the process since the designing stage, but we could successfully complete the project thanks to our client’s understanding and many people’s efforts.

After finishing up the construction and then opening a café, the client became busier and busier. This was because many customers came to visit the café to see the building and taste the (homemade) coffee and bread based on the word-of-mouth marketing. It seemed like the client’s character of looking at the essence in a calm way, without too much excitement or disappointment, was well reflected in the coffee and bread at the café and passed onto the customers.

We are not one hundred percent sure if the building reflects the character of our client as we planned. Nevertheless, we now hope that the roastery house can exhibit the client’s special philosophy since it has distinctive features from other cafes.
