종로구 부암동.

과거 자두나무가 가득하던, 북악산 자락에 위치한 오래된 서울의 동네

이제 이곳은 레스토랑과 까페로 더 유명한 동네가 되었고, 이곳을 찾는 구경온 사람들로 북적이는 동네가 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이곳은 북악산, 인왕산, 북한산을 볼 수 있는 전망과 원한다면 서울 도심이나 북악산을 걸어서도 갈 수 있다는 지리적 이점, 그리고 부암동이 만들어 내는 특유의 분위기 덕분에 이곳은 사람들에게 매우 인기있는 동네가 되었다. 이러한 동네에 오랫동안 1960년대 도시형한옥의 모습을 그대로 유지한채 서있던 집이 있었고 이 한옥의 모습에 매료된 건축주는 이곳에 사시던 노부부로부터 이 집을 구입하였다.

집은 크게 네개의 공간으로 구성되어 있었다. 50년가까이 된 한옥, 이후 덧붙여져 만들어진 창고, 그리고 이 두 건물로 인해 만들어진 두개의 마당. 그리고 이렇게 구성된 이들 네개의 공간은 서로 따로따로 그 땅에 존재하고 있었다. 따라서 우리는 이 별개로 존재하는 네개의 공간을 관통해 이어주는 공간의 흐름을 만들고 그럼으로써 각각의 공간의 기능과 목적을 새로이 정의해주고자 하였다.

그렇게 막상 공사가 시작되었을때  먼저 마주한 60년대 도시형한옥의 상태는 매우 심각한 듯 보였다. 특히나 구조적인 문제는 매우 심각했다. 우선 지붕을 받치고 있는 한옥의 기둥은 어느것 하나도 썩지 않은 것이 없었다. 손으로 힘들 줘도 부서져 버리는 기둥대신에 50여년동안 덧발라온 시멘트와 장농이 집을 지탱하고 있었다. 벽은 눈으로도 식별할 수 있을 만큼 기울어졌고 거기다 지붕은 군데군데 주저않아서 서까래들이 부러진 곳도 있었다. 그러니 주저않은 지붕에서 물이 새는 것은 당연한 현상이었다.

아쉽게도 이미 집으로서의 생명을 다한듯한 느낌이었다.   

하지만 건축주의 의지는 확고했다. 물리적으로 많은 불편함들이 있을 수 있겠지만

오래된 집과 이 집의 오래된 물건들을 가급적 지키고 싶어 하였다.

따라서 우리는 이 꺼져가는 한옥과 마당에 있는 나무들, 벽에 나있는 오래된 나무창 등을 모두 살려보기로 하였다. 우선 한옥은 기둥을 대신할 구조의 보강과 꺾여버린 서까래들로 인해 기울어진 집을 다시 곧게 세우는 것이 가장 절실했다. 따라서 완전히 썩어버린 기둥과 보들을 대신해 H빔으로 구조를 보강하고 집 전체를 들어올려 기울어진 집을 바로 세웠다. 부러진 서까래를 보강하고 비가 새는 기와도 손을 봐야했다. 끝으로 답답한 실내는 바닥높이를 낮춰서 높이를 확보해야했다.

마치 의족을 달고 휠체어에서 일어나 걸을 수 있게 된 느낌이었다.

또한 언제부터인지도 모르는 때부터 만들어져 더해지고 덧붙여진 모습의 창고는 구조를 보강하고  단열과 난방을 해서 사람이 살 수 있는 공간으로 만들었다.

그리고 한옥과 마당, 창고에서 바뀐 신관, 이 신관에서 나가는 작은 뒷마당을 연결해주며, 동시에 마당을 나누고 마당의 쓰임을 새로이 정의해줄 브릿지(bridge)공간이 더해져 집이 완성되었다. 이 과정에서 브릿지의 형태는 마당의 나무들을 피해 결정되었으며 그 색상 또한 마당에 피는 꽃들을 고려해 결정되었다.

이 집은 앞서 살펴봤듯이 크게 네 개의 다른느낌의 공간들로 이루어져있다. 외과수술을 한 한옥, 푸른색의 브릿지, 창고에서 바뀐 신관, 그리고 뒷마당이다. 각각은 서로 완전히 다른 느낌들을 만들어내서 마치 한땅에 서로 다른 집들이 함께 있는 것처럼 느껴지기도 하지만 동시에 이 다른 느낌의 공간들은 집 전체를 이어주는 동선안에서 끊임없이 다양하고 풍부한 시선들을 만들어 준다.

그리고 이는 오랜된 집에 대한 존중과 그 안의 것들을 유지하고 공존시킬때 얻을 수 있는 특별한 선물이 아닐까 싶다.

Buam-dong is an old neighborhood that used to be covered in plum trees.

It is located at the foot of Mount Bukak. One home maintained Korea ‘s traditional urban housing style from the 1960s onward, and the clients, drawn to the style, bought it from the old couple who had owned it.

The house comprised four large spaces. The close to fifty year old traditional Korean edifice, a st st that we could re-define the function and purpose of each space.

The first space we dealt with was the traditional house.

The condition was very bad, especially its structure. The pillars supporting the roof were rotten, the walls were visibly tilted, and the roof had partially collapsed here and there, with some of rafters actually broken. Sadly, it seemed the house had run its course.

However, the clients were adamant. They wanted to keep the old house and its old fixtures as much as possible, even if such decision might cause various discomforts in physical terms.

To achieve this, reinforcement of the structure was desperately needed along with replacement of the pillars to stand the tilted house upright once more. We strengthened the structure with new beams, eliminating the rotten pillars and old beams, and put the house back into an upright position, lifting the whole house. The broken rafters were replaced, and the leaking roof tiles repaired. Finally, the stuffy interior of the house was changed into a tall space by lowering the floor height.

For the storeroom, The structure was reinforced and insulation and heating were added to create a suitable living space.

Lastly, to complete the new house, a bridging space was added. This linked the traditional house with the yards, the storeroom turned into a new building. A small yard leading out from the new building divides the yards and defines their use.

The house comprises four distinctive spaces: a traditional Korean house that underwent major cosmetic surgery, a blue bridge, a storeroom turned into a new building, that it seems like different houses are all in one place, but at the same time, these spaces with different features continue to create diverse imagery in abundance within the flow line linking the whole house. This is a special gift that can only be manifest when an old house is respected and what lies within is maintained harmoniously.
